Why I Believe in Going Green

Blog, Going Green / Monday, October 15th, 2018

“And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’”
Matthew 25:20-21

I used to make fun of people who cared about the environment… until I became one of them.

If you haven’t seen this video you’re welcome…

“Mark my word… it has tigers in it…”

After that good laugh, I believe in going green. Yes I do! And you know why?

The short version is God has given us this earth and our job is to take care of it. So, to me, that means doing what we can to ensure that it’s clean, orderly and conserved.

Am I a total tree hugger? No. But I do believe in conservation, recycling, renewable energy and overall environmental health.

I met a girl who ended up being one of my good friends. She was different. She did everything she could to reduce waste and promote overall earth wellness, and she inspired me. I know that I have inspired others as well and you can too! So what can you do to help your environment? Here are some starting points!

  1. You can recycle.
Recycling is not hard- contrary to what most people believe. If your city has a system put in place for it you are set. I don’t even use recycle bins. I use laundry baskets from the dollar tree. You can also use trash cans and divide them into paper, plastic, glass, cardboard. In our city’s case the recycle bins are not separated by material so I don’t have to separate mine, but you can choose to do it as you will. I would estimate that about 70% of what I throw away I found out was recyclable. That is no stretch. I was throwing away A LOT of stuff I didn’t have to. So designate a spot in your home and go that extra mile.

2. Use recyclable products.
Did you know normal toothbrushes are not recyclable? They are not. They are not biodegradable. Most plastic is not. BUT there are bamboo toothbrushes that you can use that will make your mouth and earth happy!

You can also buy stainless steel straws when you don’t want to use plastic straws. They are dishwasher safe and will last! You can also get silicone, but I don’t recommend paper straws or cardboard straws unless you want it to taste like you are drinking a box.

And there are reusable shopping bags; however, most don’t know that plastic shopping bags ARE recyclable. So if you aren’t using clothe shopping bags you can easily recycle your plastic ones. Or just keep them in another plastic bag under your sink for small trash bags like I do. LOL

2. Support a wildlife cause or renewable energy cause.

Do you see this animal right here? This is by far one of my favorite animals. This is an African Elephant.

One of the things that inspired me to go green were my trips to Africa. The poverty I saw and smelt was overwhelming. In the midst of the beautiful mountains of Kenya were piles of trash and trash laden the streets, and trash being burned over coal.

We are blessed to live in a country that is not so and we should work hard to keep it that way.

We also need to conserve the beautiful wildlife that God entrusted to us.

Choose a cause that supports wildlife and get behind it.

ONE elephant dies every 15 minutes throughout the African continent. So what can we do?

There are organizations that choose to help endangered wildlife through sales like… https://www.ivoryella.com/pages/about-us, IVORY ELLA. They donate 10% of their sales to saving African elephants, which doesn’t seem like a whole lot, but it’s some and you get cute merch out of it.

Or you can donate to another organization that supports conservation through media… such as https://theivorygame.com/. If you have not seen it I encourage it. Sad but eye opening.

If your cause is not elephants look into other wildlife options; maybe it’s whales, lions or another endangered species that needs help.

If you aren’t an animal person and would rather focus on the energy side of things, find a renewable energy resource to support or raise support of. Whether that be wind, solar, or water.

Find a cause and get behind it.

We have been given dominion over the animals by God, and we should use it wisely.

I’m not saying don’t have a steak. I love steak. LOL

Genesis 9:3 says, “Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.”

So this blog is not intended to discriminate against that.

However, there are some animals we just don’t eat. An elephant being one of them. So let’s conserve as much of it’s meat as possible. LOL

There ya go, three ways you can GO GREEN and feel GOOD about it!

And yes I recycle, I have bamboo toothbrushes and stainless steel straws and I am budgeting for some Ivory Ella merch. LOL
