Living Blind

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”
Matthew 6:22 (NIV)

This week I haven’t had glasses. It’s been an… experience.

I can see, but it’s blurry and I start to get a headache after awhile. Between my job, my book, and my hobbies (which include sitting around and doing nothing) I basically spend half my day or more on my computer, phone or watching Netflix. This is hard to do with no glasses.

In fact, I am popping two Ibuprofen as we speak.

As the blur of the week goes by, I am reminded of a verse in God’s Word that resinates with me,

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”
Matthew 6:22 (NIV)

The eye is the lamp… that means it either lights up your world, or dims it.

I watched a movie recently. It was a horror movie. I have this new thing with scary movies. It is short of like a love/hate relationship. I really like scary movies, but there is usually a ton of crap in them- for lack of a better word.

This movie was no exception. Usually I will watch thrillers and crime documentaries. I enjoy a murder mystery and seeing killers brought to justice, although I wish we didn’t have them because that would mean the world wasn’t so dark.

But, this movie wasn’t just a crime film or a murder mystery.

This movie was sinister.

What I thought would be a crime thriller turned out to be about a woman from the Salem witch trials and had a demonic undertone to it. Now, I usually turn anything off that uses anything demonic like that, because demons are very real, biblically speaking.

According to God’s Word there is a spiritual realm that exists that we do not see.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

So there is a realm of darkness and a realm of light, according to God’s Word.

Instead of turning this off, I kept watching, convinced I had to know the end. And wouldn’t you know, I was almost scared to the point of tears?

Scared does not define it.

I did sleep but I was very aware that if I put my hand too close to the edge of the bed, she might get me. Or if I slept without a light on, well… that just wasn’t an option.

Isn’t it funny how we watch crap, and then we are surprised when we think like crap?

You can’t forget certain things.

That’s why God’s Word is so weary of things that we watch, listen to and put into our bodies. It affects our bodies.

This coming from the woman who watched that movie, ate Whataburger today and listened to Missy Elliot this morning. (Nobody can rap like Missy!)

Now, my weakness is rap. I love me some rap. LOVE IT.

But let’s face it. Even I know when the rap I listen to affects me. I can tell by how I think and what I say. Sometimes the 2 Chains comes out…

And I know how what I watch affects me for sure.

Consider the next part of that verse, “If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Matthew 6:23

Darkness can be great. It can be deep.

Let’s keep all this in mind.

You are loved.
You are valued.
You are useful.
